Stay Calm and Familiarize Yourself With What to Do Next!

25 Oct 2024

Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming. In the moment, it can be difficult to think clearly. Taking a few slow breaths and staying as calm as possible can help you focus on gathering important information that may be needed later for your insurance claim.
For drivers in Ontario, collecting accurate details at the scene can help your broker and insurance company process your claim more efficiently.

Information to Have Ready When Filing a Claim

After an accident, your insurer will request certain details.
Having the following information available can help move the process forward:

✔️ Your insurance policy number
(This can typically be found on your pink liability card, policy documents, or renewal paperwork.)
✔️ Your driver’s licence number
✔️ Your vehicle registration information
✔️ Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
(The VIN is usually visible through the lower corner of the driver’s side windshield and can also be found on your vehicle registration document.)

Provide a Detailed Description of the Accident

When reporting a claim, be prepared to describe:

➡️ The exact location of the accident
➡️ The date and time
➡️ Weather and road conditions
➡️How the collision occurred
➡️ Whether other vehicles or property were involved

If you have dash cam footage or photos, share them with your insurer. Clear documentation can assist with understanding how the incident occurred.

Gather Information from Other Drivers

Exchange information with all involved drivers. This typically includes:

➡️ Full names
➡️ Addresses and phone numbers
➡️ Driver’s licence numbers and expiry dates
➡️ Licence plate numbers
➡️ Insurance company names and policy numbers
➡️ Vehicle make, model, and color

In Ontario, drivers are required to exchange information following a collision.

Note Any Injuries

Document any injuries to yourself, your passengers, or others involved. Even if injuries seem minor at the time, it is important to report them accurately. Also note whether anyone received medical attention at the scene or was transported by ambulance.

Collect Witness Information

If there were witnesses, ask for their names and contact information. Independent witness statements can sometimes help clarify how an accident occurred.

Document Vehicle and Property Damage

If it is safe to do so, take clear photos and videos of:

➡️ Damage to all vehicles involved
➡️ The surrounding area and road conditions
➡️ Licence plates
➡️ Any property damage

If a vehicle is towed, make a note of the towing company and the storage location. This information may be needed by your insurer.

Police Reporting and Collision Reporting Centers

In Ontario, certain accidents must be reported to police or through a Collision Reporting Centre. For example, collisions involving injuries or significant property damage generally require reporting.

If police attend the scene, record:

➡️ The officer’s name and badge number
➡️ The police service involved
➡️ The report number

If a report is filed through a Collision Reporting Centre, keep a copy of the report details for your records. You should also inform your insurer if any traffic charges were issued in connection with the accident.
