Stay Calm and Familiarize Yourself With What to Do Next!

Being in a car accident can make it hard to stay calm, remember to take a deep breath to try and keep your composure. Making sure you keep your cool at the scene to gather key details can be a big help later on, for both you and your insurance provider. Collect as much information as possible while you’re there, this will aid your broker and insurance company in processing your claim efficiently.

 

Before filing a car insurance claim, make sure you have the following details prepared:

 

Your Insurance Policy Number, Driver’s License Number, Vehicle Registration Information and Vehicle VIN:

Your insurance policy number (You can find this number on your policy renewal docs or insurance bills you’ve received). Driver’s license number, and vehicle registration information, including your VIN “Vehicle identification Number” (you can find your vehicle’s VIN on the driver’s side of the windshield located right in the corner, easiest way to view is from the outside of the car).

Detailed Description of the Accident

Be sure to provide a thorough description of the accident, including the precise location, the date and time, the weather conditions, and whether another vehicle was involved. If you have dash cam footage, be sure to share that with your insurance company as well.

 

Gather Information About All Other Drivers and Passengers Involved in the Accident

Be sure to record their names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers and expiration dates, vehicle registration details, and insurance information.

 

Take Note of Any Injuries

Make sure to take note of any injuries to yourself, your passengers, or others involved in the accident. Also, record whether anyone received treatment at the scene or was transported by ambulance.

 

Contact Information for All Witnesses of the Accident

Make sure you have their name, phone number, and address.

 

Document any Damage to the Vehicles Involved or Property

Noting as many details as possible. Include whether any vehicles were towed from the scene, and if yours is towed, make sure to write down its location. Before moving any vehicles, if it’s safe and possible to do so, take photos and videos of the damage to provide evidence for your insurer.

 

Details about police involvement

Record the name, phone number, badge number of any officers at the scene, and the police report number. Make sure to disclose to your insurer if any traffic tickets were issued to you or other drivers because of the accident.
